Botox Q & A

Advanced Dermatology Surgery Center

What is Botox?

Botox consists of botulinum toxin that’s FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles. When a small amount of Botox is injected into a muscle, it temporarily blocks nerve signals, which makes the muscle relax.

What types of wrinkles are treated by Botox?

Botox treats specific types of wrinkles called dynamic wrinkles. These wrinkles develop over the years in spots where certain muscles repeatedly contract. Since they’re caused by muscles, dynamic wrinkles can be treated with a Botox injection.

As the muscle relaxes and stops contracting, its associated wrinkles disappear or become significantly diminished. By comparison, wrinkles caused by sun damage and age-related changes like loss of collagen won’t respond to Botox. They need other treatments such as dermal fillers.

Botox is used to treat these wrinkles:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead furrows
  • Frown lines between eyebrows
  • Bunny lines at the top and sides of the nose
  • Neck wrinkles

What can you expect during Botox injections?

Dr. Kardashian explains the procedure before it begins, so you’ll know what to expect throughout the process. A precise amount of Botox is injected into the targeted muscles using a very thin needle.

When an experienced physician like Dr. Kardashian injects Botox, she targets small areas of specific muscles. As a result, wrinkles become diminished while you retain natural facial expression.

Botox treatment usually takes less than 15 minutes, but the length of time depends on the area being treated and the number of injections you need. The injection site may be slightly red when the session is over, but you can apply makeup and get back to your normal routine without needing downtime to recover. Dr. Kardashian may recommend that you avoid physical activity for a few hours.

How long do results last?

It takes a short time for Botox to take full effect, so you’ll see results in three to seven days. Results last four to six months for most people. While Botox gradually wears off and you’ll begin to see wrinkles again, you can get another treatment to maintain the effect. The results often last longer when you get additional Botox treatments.
