Warts Q & A

What are warts?

Warts are skin growths caused by viral infections in your skin. Warts extends to the deeper layer of your skin where the infection is “rooted.” During treatment, it’s important to reach this layer of tissue so the virus can be completely destroyed to prevent the wart from regrowing. Warts appear most commonly on the hands, but they can also form on other parts of your body, including your feet (these are called plantar warts). Because they’re caused by a viral infection, warts can be transmitted from one person to another through touch. In fact, they can be quite contagious, especially if your immune system is compromised.

What techniques does Dr. Kardashian use to tell if a growth is a wart?

Dr. Kardashian can diagnose most warts from their appearance, coupled with a thorough review of your medical history and your symptoms. In some cases, she takes a small sample of the wart for further evaluation in a lab to rule out other possible diagnoses.

How are warts treated?

Because warts have deep roots in the lower layers of your skin, they can be very stubborn to treat. Although some warts can be treated effectively with prescription-strength topical medications, most warts respond best to:

  • Cryotherapy to “freeze off” the wart with liquid nitrogen
  • Cautery which uses heat to burn the wart away

Both techniques are performed in the office, and each takes just a few minutes to perform.

Is it OK to treat my warts with an over-the-counter product?

No. First, some growths may look like warts, but they may actually be something else. You should always have any type of skin growth evaluated by a doctor before taking any steps to treat it. Second, over-the-counter wart products are not strong enough to penetrate to the deepest layers of tissue to destroy the roots of the wart and the viral infection that causes warts. As a result, while the upper visible portion of the wart may disappear, the virus is still present and can still cause warts to form either in the same area or in another area of your skin. And finally, over-the-counter products can be very harsh, which means they’re more likely to cause scars. Dr. Kardashian provides the safest and most effective treatment options for warts so you can feel more confident about your appearance.
